In September 2025, the United Kingdom and the United States announced the establishment of the Atlantic Partnership for Advanced Nuclear Energy (APANE), an intergovernmental framework to accelerate the deployment of next-generation nuclear reactors, in conjunction with an official visit to the UK by President Trump. APANE is a comprehensive framework encompassing the development of advanced reactors in the United Kingdom, including small modular reactors (SMRs), strengthened cooperation between the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and collaboration in the nuclear fuel supply chain. This article focuses on APANE and outlines recent developments in advanced reactor deployment in the UK and UK–US regulatory cooperation.
